LED count, irradiance, and dose: why more LEDs are not automatically better

More LEDs Doesn't Automatically Mean More Effect

The number of LEDs in itself says little about the light dose your skin receives.

What is Irradiance?

Irradiance describes how much optical power arrives per unit area, usually expressed in mW/cm². Distance and measurement conditions are also important.

What is Dose?

The total energy per unit area is often expressed in J/cm². In a simplified model, this is related to irradiance and time.

What Should You Look At Instead?

  • Actual wavelengths
  • Irradiance and measurement distance
  • Treatment time and dose
  • Treatment surface area
  • Ease of use and safety information

Conclusion

LED count is a specification, but not an independent measure of quality.
